Counsel Cast Gains New Authority Role

Counsel Cast Gains New Authority Role

Many lawyers struggle with visibility, despite being highly skilled in their specific fields. They often remain unknown in their own markets, even when they are among the best in their area. The difficulty lies not in their legal knowledge, but in knowing how to build the visibility that brings clients to them. This gap between ability and recognition creates a significant barrier to success for many practitioners.

Terry Alfossum, a former Air Force captain and survival expert who won a reality show, developed a method to help professionals reach the top one percent of their industry. He notes that many attorneys try to mimic the strategies of their competitors, which often leads to failure. When a lawyer’s website looks like everyone else’s or their networking efforts are generic, they struggle to stand out in a crowded field.

People naturally gravitate toward choices that have been tested and proven, like popular commercial options. A potential client might wonder why they should choose a unique approach over a popular one. However, relying on common methods usually results in mediocre results. Alfossum suggests that the key to success is doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing.

Trust is a critical factor in client relationships, yet it is often difficult to establish. Lawyers face a unique challenge because the profession has historically been viewed with skepticism. To overcome this, attorneys must focus on answering specific, emotional questions their clients have. When a lawyer addresses a client’s personal concerns directly, they create an emotional link that can lead to a referral.

Writing a book on a specific topic, such as elder law, allows an attorney to “own” a client’s attention. If a lawyer writes about a subject that a client is emotionally invested in, that client is more likely to hire them. Even speaking engagements, which many professionals find intimidating, can transform a local attorney into the obvious choice for a client’s needs.

Finding the right stage to speak on is often easier than it seems. Organizations like corporate wellness programs, chambers of commerce, and rotary clubs frequently seek speakers who can address specific community issues. Lawyers can reach out to these groups directly, offering talks that solve local problems. These low-hanging fruit opportunities can quickly fill a practice.

Authentic care for the client is what separates successful firms from the rest. Many professionals worry about FOMO, or the fear of missing out, and try to copy the marketing tactics of their most successful competitors. This approach is flawed because those competitors achieved their position by doing something different. Instead of copying others, lawyers should focus on the specific needs of their clients.

Alfossum’s advice highlights the need for a robust intake system. If a firm cannot properly manage the flow of new leads, high visibility will not matter. Legal intake experts warn that small errors during the initial client contact can destroy a potential relationship before it begins. By prioritizing genuine client care and refining operational workflows, attorneys can finally break through the noise and secure the success they deserve.
