Lawyers Adapt to New Client Habits

AI is poised to fundamentally change client acquisition, intercepting those first questions and conversations. Law will remain a people’s game, says Wayne Hassay, but lawyers must adopt new approaches to finding and keeping new business. AI is moving the starting line of client acquisition: Consumers are increasingly turning to generative AI platforms with their initial problems, before they even realize they have a legal issue or start looking for an attorney.

AI will expand overall legal demand: AI conversations will uncover consumer questions that previously stayed buried — meaning AI platforms should create new legal work and redirect the demand lawyers already rely on, rather than reduce it.

Historically, client acquisition was a discontinuous, multistage process. The consumer first had to recognize that a question might be legal and worth taking to counsel. Next, reputation and referrals supplied borrowed confidence, not proof that the lawyer was right for the consumer. Advertising, websites and internet search sought to create that confidence more broadly, often through noisy promises of money, justice or freedom now.

Only then did the critical individualized legal conversation begin, commonly through a “free consultation.” That conversation was the on-ramp to representation. The lawyer heard the question and decided whether the matter fit the practice and its economics. If it did, the lawyer framed the issue, built trust, and the relationship continued.

AI collapses and smooths those preliminary stages of client acquisition within one platform. The consumer can begin by asking ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude what happened and what to do next before recognizing that the question is legal or looking for counsel. At this combined stage, AI has a decided advantage.

Even today, AI simulates individualized attention and apparent authority. It will improve exponentially. By receiving and responding to the question, the platform can create the initial confidence once supplied by reputation, referrals and advertising. It can begin building the deeper trust that traditionally developed during the consultation. AI becomes the critical first conversation.

Lawyers must be prepared to adapt to a new environment where AI plays a central role in client acquisition. This may require lawyers to rethink their approach to marketing and client engagement, and to find ways to work effectively with AI platforms, such as using growth strategies that incorporate AI.

Law firms need a deliberate strategy — whether through internal platforms, optimization, curated leads or embedded affiliations — to capture clients where those first AI conversations are happening.

The questions are moving, and lawyers must go where they are, or someone else will decide whether they reach a lawyer and which one. Lawyers must be proactive and adaptable, but also have significant opportunities for those who are willing to adjust to new circumstances.

It is a challenge.
